I have written to the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, urging him to publish daily figures of deaths outside of hospitals, including in care homes.
These figures are currently being published in England on a weekly basis but this isn’t anywhere near quick enough or regular enough, especially as figures from other countries suggest that up to half of coronavirus deaths happen in care homes.
Daily reporting of these deaths would show the scale of the problem, where it is and how fast it is spreading so that we can get to grips with the problem, take proper action and prevent more families from losing elderly and disabled loved ones.
