On Wednesday 6th March I spoke from the Opposition Front Bench in a Parliamentary debate about homecare workers.
Homecare workers do a vital job – they care for over a million of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. They enable older and disabled people to keep living independently in their own homes by helping them get washed, dressed and fed.
Home care workers often work on zero-hours contracts, and in most cases are not paid for their travel time or costs, meaning that in effect, they are paid less than the minimum wage. In my speech I argued that we need to improve training, working and pay conditions in this important sector.
