On Tuesday 4th June I hosted a reception in Parliament for Saga, who offer holidays, insurance and other services for people over 50 years old.
I spoke about the vital contribution older people make to our economy and society as a whole. An increasing number of older people are, or want to continue working after they retire, especially if they can do so flexibly or part-time. Many older people also give vital help to their families by looking after grandchildren, and their communities, for example by volunteering. Yet all too often we seem to talk about older people as if they are a ‘burden’, overlooking their crucial contribution. We need to celebrate and support the vital role older people play as we all live for longer.
