Debate on children’s heart surgery at Glenfield

[08/07/2010 | 3 Comments]

I managed to secure a debate on the Government’s review of child heart surgery and the future of Glenfield Hospital’s Congenital Heart Centre. The debate was in Westminster Hall on Wednesday 7th July. You can read the Hansard report of the debate here or watch it on Parliament TV here (the debate starts at 4.30pm and last for 30 minutes).

Please help the campaign to keep children’s heart services at Glenfield by joining the Facebook group.

Glenfield is both a geographical and interlectual centre of excellence for the treatment of heart conditions. I see no point in condensing and rationalising services to the point where they end up both inadequate, incapable of treating the appropriate number of patients and being crammed into the smallest available area as near to London as possible. The NATIONAL Health Service should be available to the NATION not just those who live around the M25 !

My 7 year old grand-daughter has just had successful heart surgery at Glenfield. As we are Nottingham based it was easy for me to care for her 5 year old brother and take him to and from school and still to visit my grand-daughter in Glenfield and support her parents whilst they were there.

If this surgery had to be done at a location further afield our lives would have been made even more difficult at an already stressful time.

This centre of excellence should not be closed just because it isn’t London based.

Glenffield hospital is perfectly located, we are from Nottingham and my daughter has had successful heart surgery at glenfield in feb.

The location of glenfield is fantastic, very close to main roads, A46 & M1. We could park with ease after traveling with equal ease from Nottingham to Leicester the whole journey taking just under an hour. We have found it very convenient for the many follow up appointments my daughter has attended.

Stress was reduced by knowing we had a room to stay in very close to my daughter the whole time she was in hospital. Local amenities were also very good having a shopping centre and take out food places near by, as parents we provide our own food.

The Surgeon and Doctors including the technicians and nurses even down to the catering and cleaning staff were all fantastic.
