Helping local people find work

Jobs fair

Unemployment takes a huge toll on families and communities in my constituency. For young people, getting that first break can mean the difference between a fulfilling career and a life on benefits.

Under this Government, we’re seeing the slowest economic recovery for 100 years and getting a job is still really hard for many of my constituents.

That’s why I recently organised a Jobs and Opportunities Fair in Beaumont Leys. 32 employers and training providers took part including Toys R Us, Tescos, Avon,  the Mark Group, British Gas and Leicester College.  There were over a thousand job vacancies and 150 apprenticeships on offer in total, and more than 700 people came along.

Jobs and growth are amongst my top priorities as the local MP and my jobs fairs are a practical way of offering real help right now. I’ll also continue to campaign for Labour’s compulsory Job’s guarantee and for more high quality apprenticeships.
