I was proud to be at the launch of Leicester Labour’s manifesto for a fairer, safer, happier city with our fantastic council candidates and mayor.
The local elections are on 4th May!
Labour in Leicester’s manifesto includes our three main pledges for a fairer, safer, happier city which you can read below:
1. Fairer
Help with the cost of living
Labour will:
• Support over 20,000 households a year to reduce their cost of living with £20m a year worth of council tax, household and rent support
• Provide free community based energy advice
• Create more community shops to reduce food bills
• Provide free transport around our city centre for everyon
• Deliver a programme of free festivals and activities
• Build 1500 new affordable homes, including 600 new council homes.
2. Safer
Cleaner, safer streets
Labour will:
• Support bulky waste collection and pursue offenders where fly-tipping does happen
• Bring in new specialist anti-social behaviour teams on housing estates
• Deliver a ‘Love Leicester’ clean streets campaign by getting mess reported in real-time and cleaned up quickly
• Keep streets safe – investing in CCTV, good levels of modern street lighting, working proactively with police so people feel safe whilst also tackling crime and antisocial behaviour
• Make our roads safer with 80% of Leicester’s streets becoming 20mph zones.
3. Happier
A healthier, happier city
Labour will:
• Invest £4m in new community hubs to support families and carers
• Invest in your local high streets to make them better places for leisure and shopping whilst supporting local businesses too.
• Protect our parks and green spaces, libraries and leisure centres
• Invest £5m in play areas and new multi-use games areas across our neighbourhoods
• Expand walking and cycling routes around Leicester
• Improve the city’s bus network
• Plant 20,000 trees per year and we will be a net zero council as fast as we can.
