1 in 3 of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. Late diagnosis of cancer wastes lives and money, and Britain can’t afford either. If early diagnosis rates in this country were up with the best of other European countries, we could save up to 10,000 lives a year.
We need to increase people’s awareness of the symptoms of cancer so they go to their doctor earlier, and make sure GPs are properly trained and have the right tools to spot cancer earlier on.
It’s also vital that patients get their tests and results as quickly as possible. The Royal Colleges of GPs and Radiologists say one week is the ‘gold standard’ for getting cancer tests. That’s why I’m proud that Labour has announced we will guarantee a one week wait for cancer tests and results by the end of 2020. To achieve this, we will invest an extra £150m a year – £750m over the course of the Parliament – paid for by a new levy on tobacco companies.
I spoke about these issues at a meeting of the Cancer Campaign Group in Parliament. You can read more about Labour’s plans here and here.
