Liz criticises Government U-turn on care home loans

[28/10/2013 | No comment]

Ministers have repeatedly claimed that their plans mean no one will have to sell their home to pay for the costs of their care.

But in a recent House of Lords debate it emerged that only people with assets worth less than £23,500 will be eligible for deferred payments – loans to help cover care home fees, which have to be paid back after a person dies by selling the family home.

Many older people in Leicester who have worked hard, played by the rules, and saved all their lives will rightly feel angry that the Prime Minister has not been straight with them about what his care plans really mean.

Families deserve to be told the facts so they can properly plan for the future and not have the Government attempt to pull the wool over their eyes.
