I was honoured to pay my respects to the fallen at Leicester’s Remembrance Day service and parade in Victoria Park on Sunday. It was a deeply moving occasion as always.
It was also a huge privilege to see the recently installed memorial to commemorate Sikhs who fought in both World Wars and other global conflicts for the UK. The statute of a Sikh World War One soldier will now permanently stand alongside existing memorials in Peace Walk.
Artist Taranjit Singh designed the statue which was funded by donations from Sikh congregations, the wider public and Leicester City Council ward funding.
It is great that there is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by so many Sikhs in service of our country.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them”
