A number of constituents have contacted me about the recent claims that the British Government was involved in the Indian Government’s raid on the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984. The attack was a tragedy and the subsequent violence against Sikhs across India led to the death of thousands of innocent civilians.
The Sikh community is understandably deeply concerned at these reports. I welcome the Government’s decision to investigate, but this must be done transparently and – with the 30th anniversary of the attack falling in less than six months – with a clear timetable.
The Government should make an urgent statement to the Commons and publish all relevant material. I’ve written to Foreign Secretary William Hague calling for this, and will be meeting constituents at a lobby in Parliament later this month.
