On Friday, I attended the Primary Schools Athletics Competition at Saffron Lane Sports Centre. Pupils from many of the primary schools in my constituency took part in sprint races, relays, throwing and other events.
It was a really exciting day and the atmosphere at the stadium was electric. The competition was organised by the Leicester Schools Sport Partnership with help from young volunteers like Ratna Soni and Kiranjeet Nagra from Riverside School who told me how much they enjoyed getting involved.
I’m passionate about promoting sport in schools. Sport not only helps children get fit and healthy, but teaches them about working hard, not giving up, doing your best and being part of a team. Sport also helps bring children from different backgrounds and communities together, which is really important in our city.
It is for all these reasons that I think the Government is wrong to cut the funding for Leicester Schools Sport Partnership. I’m working to see whether other funds can be found to help make sure they can continue the fantastic work they do.
