Stopping children from going hungry in the school holidays

I have been a long-term supporter of my colleague Frank Field MP’s School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Private Members’ Bill. On Friday 19th January, I will be voting to back it.

The Bill would place a legal duty on councils to make sure free meals and activities are provided during the school holidays for children that need them.

Children who go hungry in the school holidays are more likely to fall even further behind their classmates at the beginning of each school term. This is a serious concern in Leicester, where one in five children say they worry ‘quite a lot’ about having enough to eat.

It is unacceptable for children to be going hungry and Frank’s Bill will be vitally important to fighting this injustice.
