Being told that a loved one has cancer is surely one of the most difficult things anyone can hear. As the news sinks in, families not only have to cope with all the pressures of going through treatment, but practical issues like sorting out work commitments and family finances, and dealing with all of the emotional consequences too.
It’s vital that carers of people with cancer get the support they need and organisations like Macmillan and Coping with Cancer do an amazing job to help families during this difficult time.
I recently met with a group of carers from across Leicester to hear about their experiences first hand. As a local MP and a Shadow Health Minister, I’m determined to do everything I can to ensure the best possible information, advice, services and practical support is available to cancer carers.
