Liz champions early testing for diabetes

On World Diabetes Day 2022, I’m encouraging people in Leicester to get tested for diabetes.

Rates of diabetes in Leicester are higher than the national average, with almost 1 in 10 people in the city living with the condition.

There has been a sharp rise in the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Leicester in recent years, but it’s estimated there are up to 6,600 people in the city who have diabetes but have not yet been diagnosed.

Diabetes can lead to complications such as heart attacks, strokes and amputations but early diagnosis can make a huge difference.

If you have symptoms of diabetes such as feeling very tired, being very thirsty or experiencing blurry vision, you can get tested for free at your local GP surgery. If you are between 40 and 74 you are eligible for a free NHS health check which also tests for diabetes. Pharmacies throughout Leicester also provide diabetes tests.

I recently did a test myself at Vision Pharmacy on Narborough Road. Getting diagnosed early is so important for all types of diabetes. It can save lives, prevent a medical emergency, and reduce the risk of life-changing complications later. That’s why it’s vital people get tested.

Prevention is always better than cure. My test was quick and painless, and I would encourage everyone to go out and get one themselves
