On Friday 19th January, I will be supporting my colleague Karen Buck MP’s Homes Fitness for Human Habitation Private Members’ Bill.
There are 102,000 rented homes in the East Midlands that have problems posing an immediate risk to a person’s health, which could include damp or dangerous electrical wiring.
Karen’s Bill would require landlords to make sure their properties are fit for human habitation, and if this isn’t done, allow tenants to take their landlord to court.
Everyone should have the right to a decent home and tenants need powers to challenge their landlords when their health is put at risk by dangerous accommodation.
