Liz acts to support those affected by Windrush scandal

The Government has failed to take responsibility for the terrible mistreatment of the Windrush generation. These British citizens settled in the UK between 1940 and 1970 but many of them – as well as their families – have been declared illegal immigrants, left unable to use public services and threatened with deportation as a result of the Government’s “hostile environment” policy towards immigration.

A number of my constituents have been affected and I am raising their cases with the Government’s Commonwealth Taskforce to ensure they receive the documents and citizenship status that are rightfully theirs.

I also joined more than 200 MPs in signing a letter to the Prime Minister calling for urgent action to clarify what compensation would be provided to those affected, provide clear guidance on what evidence those affected would need to provide to prove their citizenship, and to enshrine the protections promised by the Government in law.

On 2nd May, I supported Labour’s Opposition Day Motion calling on the Government to publish its correspondence relating to the Windrush scandal so that the issue could be properly investigated. I was disappointed that the Government opposed the motion and it was defeated.
