Matthew Pietrzyk, a 7-year old boy from Glenfield, was born with a rare genetic kidney disorder and desperately needs a transplant. His mum Nicola and grandfather Bernard Irwin – who is one of my constituents – are running a brilliant campaign to encourage donors to come forward, including as live donors.
On Monday June 3rd I organised a meeting in London between Bernard, Nicola and the Health Minister Anna Soubry MP. Also attending were senior officials from the Human Tissue Authority and the Department of Health.
Nicola and Bernard did a brilliant job on behalf of Matthew and many other children like him who are waiting for kidney transplants. They made a really powerful case about the need to speed up and clarify the process of registering as a living donor. Anna Soubry said she’d get back to us quickly about what more can be done – and as the local MP I will make sure we hold the Minister to her word.
