There could not be a clearer symbol of Tory failure than children being sent home from school because of crumbling concrete. Yet this sadly does not come as a surprise. Over 180 times the Tories ignored Labour warnings over the state of our school buildings and one of their very first acts when they got into Government in 2010 was to cancel Labour’s Building Schools for the Future programme.
Last week I visited Parks Primary to see the problems for myself and to hear from headteacher Cas Evans who described the issue as the most difficult she has faced in 20 years (even worse than Covid). Cas and her team have done an outstanding job moving the children into safe buildings whilst still keeping focused on teaching and learning. But they deserve better than a Government that blames everyone else for this disaster instead of taking responsibility themselves.
