Today I’ve written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, alongside Jon Ashworth, MP for Leicester South, demanding more financial support for our city. It was announced yesterday that the Government would provide additional funding for those in Tier 2 areas, backdated until August. Leicester went into further lockdown on 30 June, meaning that unless urgent action is taken, our city will miss out on funding to cover our extended lockdown period.
Leicester has been in lockdown for longer than anywhere else in the country – yet has only received a fraction of the support offered elsewhere. We need support for the city’s businesses backdated to July, so the costs of our additional lockdown are covered. We also need funding to support our city council to carry out test and trace Additionally, we must also ensure that no school loses out on funding because of additional costs suffered throughout the pandemic.
