This week, Labour has announced that they will deliver vital maintenance in hospitals to help prevent cancelled appointments and operations, with patients in Leicester West set to benefit from the Government’s Plan for Change.
Across the country, over 400 hospitals, mental health units and ambulance sites will be handed £750million to tackle long-term problems such as leaky pipes, poor ventilation and electrical issues, helping to prevent thousands of cancelled operations and appointments.
The projects include much needed works at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester General Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary in Leicester, which will help patients benefit from better services and facilities across the health system. £7,213,000 will go towards;
- Improvements to medical gas systems, water systems, electrical systems, external and internal building fabric and fixtures, heating systems, building management systems, ventilation systems and security systems;
- Drainage works;
- Roof works;
- Fire safety works and,
- Lift upgrades.
Patients and staff deserve to be in buildings that are safe, comfortable and fit for purpose, so this funding is vital and another step in this Government’s mission to fix the dire state of public service infrastructure inherited from the Tories.
Liz Kendall, Labour MP for Leicester West said:
“Our doctors and nurses work tirelessly to provide the best care, and they deserve hospitals that match their dedication. That’s why I’m pleased to see vital maintenance work taking place in Leicester, ensuring facilities are fit for the future. I hear time and again from constituents frustrated by cancelled appointments, delayed surgeries, and long waiting lists.
“This Labour Government is taking action to put patients first and rebuild our NHS, but I know there’s still much more to do, and I won’t stop fighting for the care people deserve.”
